Absolutely Amazing for Kids!
I cannot say enough about the Lego Mindstorm NXT 2.0 robot kits. My 12 y/o daughter is on her schools' FIRST Lego Robotics Team which uses these robots in their competitions. My wife and I decided to get her one for Christmas so she could continue playing and learning with it at home in an attempt to continue guiding her towards a future in science or engineering. She LOVES the kit and has no problems building the robot or the software programs to run it all on her own. I love seeing how excited she gets when she adds a new feature to her robot or comes up with a new design and then brings it out to show it off to us. This is EXACTLY the kind of "toy" that every parent should get their kid. It is high educational and something that kids love to play with. Yes, the price is a little steep but it is worth every penny.

Best programmable robot on the market
I have been looking for a robot that can be programmed AND it is very easy to do so. My main criteria is that a kid can program it using PC without the need to learn any kind programming language.

My daughter is just 7 years so I wanted to introduce her to programming with a simple user interface.

This is the only robot I found (beside Parallax Scribbler Robot) that matches my criteria.

PROs:
  • the kit allows kids to create various kinds of robots like vehicles, machines and standing humanoid
  • the Internet has a strong online Lego robot community with lots of resources and published projects
  • this "toy" will last for years because it allows the child program every more complex tasks over the years
  • it helps kids to be creative, learn about basic robotics and allows team work with others (a good way to get great job in 21st century)

CONs:
  • a bit pricey but it offers great value that will pay itself off over the years and in child's future career
